Link building in Dubai: do backlinks still matter, and how do you earn them?

Backlinks still matter in the UAE, but only the ones a real site would give you anyway. Which links Google treats as spam, how to earn good ones in the GCC, and what to do about junk links.

Yes, backlinks still matter in the UAE, but not the way most link-building offers in Dubai sell them. Google still uses links to discover pages and to judge how well known a business is; its own local ranking help page lists the number of sites linking to you as part of prominence. What changed is that bought, swapped and automated links are named as spam in Google’s policies, so the only links worth building are ones a real site would give you anyway.

For a business in Dubai, that means fewer, better links: trade and local press, partners, associations, events, and content good enough that others cite it. This guide explains which links count, which ones can hurt, a practical way to earn them in the GCC, and what to do if your site has already been hit by a wave of spam links.

They do, for three reasons that haven’t changed. Links are how Google finds new pages. Links from relevant sites help Google understand what your business is about and who vouches for it. And for local businesses, Google’s local ranking help page says prominence is based partly on how many websites link to your business.

What has changed is the weight of quality over quantity. A handful of links from sites your customers actually read will do more than hundreds from sites that exist only to sell links. Links also feed AI search indirectly: assistants like ChatGPT and Google’s AI features lean on pages that already rank and on brands that are mentioned around the web. Our AI search visibility guide covers that side.

Search demand reflects the confusion. In the UAE, “backlinks” is searched about 210 times a month, “what are backlinks” about 50, and “link building dubai” about 30, with most of the results on page one being agencies selling link packages.

Google’s spam policies define link spam as creating links to or from a site primarily to manipulate rankings. The examples they list include:

  • Buying or selling links for ranking purposes, including paying for posts that contain links, trading goods or services for links, and sending a free product in exchange for a review with a link.
  • Excessive link exchanges (“link to me and I’ll link to you”).
  • Using automated programs or services to create links to your site.
  • Links with optimised, keyword-stuffed anchor text in articles, guest posts or press releases distributed on other sites, and low-quality directory or bookmark links.

Paid placements themselves are allowed. Google says links bought for advertising or sponsorship are fine as long as they carry rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". Its guide to qualifying outbound links explains the tags. So a sponsored article on a UAE news site is legitimate marketing; it just won’t pass ranking value, and a publisher who offers to “leave the sponsored tag off” is offering you link spam.

The test we use

Would this link exist if search engines didn’t? If a real reader could click it and find something useful, it’s probably fine. If its only purpose is the ranking, it’s the kind Google tries to ignore or penalise.

Arabic links count too. A mention in an Arabic trade publication or a Saudi industry site is just as much a link, and for businesses selling into Saudi Arabia it is often more relevant than an English one. In Saudi Arabia, the Arabic term “باك لينك” (backlink) is searched about 90 times a month, so the same link-package market exists there.

None of these are tricks. They are ordinary marketing activities done with links in mind.

1. Claim the links you already deserve

Start with relationships you already have. Suppliers that list stockists, partners with “our clients” or “our partners” pages, associations and chambers you belong to, free zones and accelerators you went through, universities you recruit from, events you spoke at. Many will link if you ask, and most businesses never ask. Also search for mentions of your brand that don’t link and request the link.

2. Publish something worth citing

Journalists and bloggers link to sources. Original data works best: a survey of your customers, a price index from your own transactions, a market map, a benchmark from anonymised numbers you are allowed to share. A free tool that solves a common problem earns links for years. One genuinely useful asset beats fifty generic blog posts.

3. Give journalists what they need

UAE business, trade and lifestyle media regularly need expert comment, local data and case examples. Build a short list of reporters covering your sector, follow what they write, and offer a specific angle with a named expert when your topic is in the news. A quote with a link in a respected local publication is worth more than any package.

4. Show up in the community

Sponsor or host an event that fits your audience, speak on a panel, judge an award, run a workshop with a university or business council. These create pages that naturally mention and link to you. If the sponsorship page uses rel="sponsored", that is fine: you still gain the visibility and the brand mention.

5. Make your own site link-worthy

People only link to pages that are good to land on: fast, clear, with a specific answer. Check your site first with our free Growth Audit Grader, then make sure your best content is easy to find and reference.

Most monthly packages sold as “link building Dubai” or “guest posting UAE” are a fixed number of placements on sites that sell posts to anyone. Ask the provider three questions: Which sites, by name? Will the links be tagged as sponsored? Would those sites link to us if we didn’t pay? If the list is hidden, the answer to the second is no, or the answer to the third is no, you are buying exactly what Google’s policy describes.

That doesn’t make outside help useless. Digital PR, content that earns citations and partnership outreach are real services. The difference is that you are paying for the work and the ideas, not for links by the dozen. We break down what a full monthly programme should include in our guide to SEO packages in Dubai.

Almost every site eventually picks up junk links from scraper sites and automated networks you had nothing to do with. Google is generally good at ignoring these. Our own site picked up a wave of them from throwaway domains this autumn, and most no longer show up in third-party link indexes a few weeks later.

Google’s disavow tool documentation says to first try to get bad links removed, and to disavow only if you can’t, calling it an advanced feature that can harm your performance if used incorrectly. In practice, consider a disavow file if you (or a previous agency) bought links, if you see a manual action in Search Console, or if a spam wave is large and persistent. Disavow at domain level, keep the file, and don’t disavow links just because a tool gave them a low score.

  • Referring domains from relevant sites, not total backlink count. One new link from a sector publication beats 500 from a spam network.
  • Referral visits from those links in Google Analytics. A link nobody clicks is a weak link.
  • Rankings and impressions for the pages that earned links, in Search Console.
  • Brand mentions, including unlinked ones and mentions in AI answers.
  • Enquiries from organic search over the following months, which is the point.

Our marketing measurement guide shows how to tie these to pipeline instead of reporting them as vanity numbers.

Frequently asked questions.

Are backlinks still a ranking factor in 2026?

Yes. Google uses links to discover pages and as one signal of how well known a site or business is. Relevance and quality matter far more than volume.

Is it illegal or banned to buy backlinks?

It isn’t illegal, but buying links to manipulate rankings breaks Google’s spam policies. Paid links are allowed if they carry rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow", in which case they don’t pass ranking value.

How many backlinks do I need to rank in Dubai?

There is no fixed number. Look at the sites ranking for your target search and how many relevant sites link to them. You need to be competitive with them on quality, not to hit a quota.

Do guest posts still work?

A genuine article on a respected site in your industry, written for its readers, is fine and can bring visitors and credibility. Guest posts stuffed with keyword-rich links, written mainly to pass ranking credit, are listed by Google as link spam.

Should I disavow spam links?

Usually not. Google ignores most of them. Disavow if you bought links in the past, have a manual action, or face a large, persistent spam wave, and do it carefully at domain level.

Do Arabic backlinks count?

Yes. Links from relevant Arabic sites count like any other, and for Saudi and Arabic-speaking audiences they are often the most relevant links you can earn.

So, do backlinks still matter in the UAE? Yes, but only the ones a real site would give you without being paid to. Earn them through relationships, citable content, press and community, ignore most of the junk, and measure by relevant referring domains and enquiries rather than link counts.
